Condensing Boilers are common sight in many homes around the UK nowadays and this is due to government legislation requiring all new boilers to be condensing. There are three main types of boilers available on the domestic heating market they are Regular, Combination (‘Combi’) and System Boilers. All of these boiler types have the condensing feature built into them allowing them to reclaim latent heat from the waste flue gases.

The flue gases contain a lot of thermal energy that with a non-condensing boiler is simply lost to the atmosphere. A modern condensing boiler is fitted with a secondary, or condensing, heat exchanger reclaiming the latent heat from the flue gases and utilising it to help reduce fuel consumption which results in lower fuel bills and reduced carbon emissions.

An old non-condensing boiler has an energy efficiency of around 70% whereas a condensing boiler boasts an energy efficiency of up to and in some cases over 90%. All modern Condensing Boilers have a SEDBUK ‘A’ rating the highest official energy efficiency rating in the UK. Therefore with a Condensing Boiler households will find that their annual fuel bills are significantly lower than that of an older boiler and their carbon footprint is reduced. It is highly recommend that households with a boiler that is 10 years or more old should replace their boiler with a new high efficiency Condensing Boiler.

A condensing boiler works in the same way as a standard gas or oil boiler whether it’s a combination, system or conventional boiler the difference is that a condensing boiler is able to reclaim latent heat from the flue gases. The flue gases are waste gases produced by the combustion of fuel and is mainly made up of carbon dioxide and water vapour and contains significant levels of heat that would otherwise be lost as the gases are vented into the atmosphere.

A condensing boiler is capable of recovering this latent heat by redirecting the flue gases over a secondary heat exchanger before expelling the gases. The heat that is captured by the boiler from the flue gases is significant and will help reduce the boilers fuel consumption and in turn help reduce the household’s annual fuel bills and carbon emissions. As the heat is extracted from the flue gases the water vapour in the waste flue gases condenses and the water collects in the base of the flue, hence the name condensing boiler, this condensate will require draining away.

A condensing boiler is over 87% efficient helping to make significant saving in annual fuel bills as well as reducing the homes carbon footprint. In April 2005 government legislation made it law that all new boiler installations in the UK should be a high efficiency condensing boiler, this was brought into help the government reach it carbon reduction targets.
